A valley with a proud tradition in gold and copper mining and home to Ireland's oldest woolen mill (1723), Avoca has become more renowned in recent years as the location for the very popular BBC television soap opera "Ballykissangel." The village set includes the Church of Saints Mary and Patrick, built in 1862, and "Fitzgeralds" the local watering hole. The series is now transmitted in seventeen countries.
